The One-Legger: Why Half Your Best Appointments Can't Close

A sit with only one decision-maker home closes at a fraction of the rate. The fix isn't a better pitch — it's confirming both will be there before anyone drives out.

By Lazaro Ordonez6 min read

Your rep drives out, sets up the demo, runs the whole pitch, nails it — and then hits the wall every in-home salesperson knows by heart:

This looks great. I just need to run it by my husband.

He's not home. There's one decision-maker at the table and the other is at work, and you were never going to close a several-thousand-dollar purchase against an empty chair. That's a one-legger — and it's quietly torching a chunk of your best appointments.

Why it happens

Big-ticket home decisions are almost always made by two people. A new HVAC system, a roof, a water system, solar — these are “talk-to-my-spouse” purchases, and everybody at the kitchen table knows it. So when only one of them is home, the sit is over before it starts. The present spouse can be sold, excited, ready — and still, correctly, say they can't commit for both of them. Your rep just gave a full demo to someone who was never empowered to say yes.

And here's why it keeps happening: nobody set the appointment to prevent it. The lead got booked — “great, Thursday at 4” — and not one person asked the question that decides the whole outcome: will both of you be there?

Why a one-legger isn't a real appointment

A one-legger looks like an appointment on your calendar. It isn't one. It's a demo with a built-in “let me think about it” — a maybe you could have seen coming. You did everything right and still walked out with nothing, because the person who could say yes wasn't in the room. The problem was never your rep's pitch. It was the chair nobody confirmed would be filled.

What the pattern says

In-home sales lives and dies on this. Major home purchases — windows, roofs, furnaces, water systems — are two-decision-maker deals, and the number of them closed by one person alone is small on purpose. Getting both people to the table doesn't just raise your close rate; it collapses the sales cycle, because there's no second trip, no “let me talk it over and call you back,” no chase. The deal gets decided while your rep is still in the room.

What the math says

Run it with your own numbers. Say you're sitting 35 appointments a month, and a third of them — around 10 — turn out to be one-leggers. A one-legger might close at maybe 15%. A sit with both decision-makers present closes at your normal rate — call it 40%. So on those 10 appointments, you're pulling one or two deals when you could be pulling four.

Set those same 10 as true two-leggers — both people confirmed at the table — and you convert two or three extra sales a month, out of appointments you were already running. You didn't need more leads or a better closer. You needed both names at the table.

The reframe

An appointment isn't “someone will be home.” It's “everyone who has to say yes will be home.” Those are completely different things, and most businesses book the first one while hoping for the second. The best reps protect their sits like a scarce resource — because they are. A rep only has so many afternoons. Spending one on a room where the decision can't be made is the same waste as a no-show; it just takes longer to feel it.

What to do about it

You have three options. One: coach your setters to always ask “will both of you be there?” Right instinct — but under pressure to book, setters take the appointment in front of them and skip the question that risks it. It slips, constantly. Two: add it to a manual confirmation call. Better, if the call actually happens — but confirmations are the first thing that falls off a busy office, and a one-legger you catch the morning of is a sit you're now scrambling to reschedule.

Three: an AI voice agent that, at booking and again at confirmation, verifies both decision-makers will be present — and if they won't, offers times that work for both, before your rep ever loads the truck. That is the build we deploy at Lead Alchemy, and it's one of the quiet ones — no flashier leads, no bigger budget, just reps walking into rooms where the answer can actually be yes. The pitch was never the problem. The guest list was.
